Dubbed “Operation Crossroads,” the Navy’s public testing of nuclear warfare in the horrifyingly successful wake of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The 4th and 5th nuclear bombs ever set off in human history was in the pacific, and the above picture is of the submerged nuclear bomb Baker exploding off the coast of Bikini Atoll in the summer of 1946. That summer, coincidentally, the newest swim wear piece the “Bikini,” was met with instant provocative success; the hottest, smallest, most “explosive” piece of swimming fashion to date.
